International

Perhaps if you read this blog, you might think I'm a workaholic with nothing more on my mind than teaching, ICT, and the mathematics progression points. You'd be wrong. I have many interests, but none more pervasive than my love of travel.

My love of travel began by realising that not everyone has my ethnic heritage. On this blog, I have mentioned my Italian connections, but on my mother's side, my ancestry is Serbian. This is a more subtle influence on my life, visible only through… Continue

Feu Follet

For me, the internet is as much, or more, about creating and sharing as accessing the work of others. Copyright laws can make it a minefield for teachers and students. These laws seem contrary to not only present day technology, but also when compared to what existed in the past, as Larry Lessig (a bit of a hero of mine)… Continue

Blogs vs Wiki's

I found this advice that a teacher had given re: blogs vs wiki's...

"If you are trying to get your kids to collaborate together, go with the wiki. If you are trying to get your kids to practice writing and try to find a voice, go with blogs."

Hope that's helpful for anyone that is having trouble deciding between the two. I'm going to speak to my mentor with this in mind.

"Docking" is "docking"

When I tell people I used to live in Florence as a research scientist, they are generally impressed. I assume that this brings to mind beautiful cityscapes, wonderful food and sitting around in cafes on piazzas watching stylish attractive Italian girls stroll past. Reality, however, was somewhat different, as this video made in 2003 with my Israeli friend illustrates.…

Five of the Best

It's been an exciting time in Inquiry this term for Grade 5/6 at Castlemaine North. Our students are investigating one of seven different questions :

• How do scientists work?

• Why do people in different countries eat different foods?

• What affects animal populations?

• How can a science concept be taught through a computer game?

• How do medieval weapons work?

• What is the most effective way to kick an AFL football?

• What features of a toy car will… Continue

Different ways of giving presentations: Ignite presentations, Pecha Kucha events and TED talks

Ignite presentations

Ignite is a 5 minute talk on anything - 20 slides that auto-advance every 15 seconds. Presenters use attractive, informative images to support what they are saying, and the audience never has time to drift off, no matter the topic. Try introducing your students to the idea and see what they come up with... Here are some examples (from hundreds):

  • On yer bike:…
