My Reflection on the Innovation Showcase

Friday the 15th May saw the annual Innovation Showcase at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne. It was an absolutely excellent event that clearly followed the theme of linking educators to share innovation. The first session I attended was ”Flat Classroom Walls” by Anne Mirtschin, which can be summed up as simply brilliant. Her ability to connect her students with others from all around the world is nothing… Continue

Bringing The World To The Classroom With SMS

For sometime now I've been thinking of a genuine reason to use SMS in the classroom to gather responses from a wider audience and today was the perfect oppurtunity. After reading a blog post from Andrew Douch who completed a similar activity in his class last week, I set out to introduce a version of the activity into my VCE Outdoor & Environmental Studies class.

At the moment we are learning about the different values people demonstrate towards nature. So with this in mind I got the studen… Continue

Never Miss A School Event Again....With Help From Google Calendar & SMS Reminders

Ever missed a yard duty or important meeting after school. How about a dentist appointment? Well to be honest I sure have but thanks to google calendar and its SMS reminders option you will never forget anything again. Watch the video/screencast below to see how easy it is to setup and then see what the message looks like when it arrives on your phone.

Hope you find it useful, the next step is to introduce my students to Google Calendars to help them remember due dates, forms and sports uniform… Continue

Can We Use Video Games in the Classroom?

Just wondering what people think about the enormous potential that games and game consoles have in the classroom. I personally am a strong advocate in there use and inclusion in the curriculum, however would like to hear peoples opinions and perhaps personal experiences in this area.

The reason I ask is I am currently involved in a study entitled 'Games for Learning' as apart of the knowledge bank and would be interested to hear what others think on the issue. As apart of the study I have setup… Continue

Hi jarrod. I'm a PE teacher from Warracknabeal SC & I've just joined Elluminate. I said I was interested in recording student athletic performances and showing them on the interactive WB. Im not vg with ICT but am willing to get into it more. Anee Mirtchin suggested I get in contact with you. So 'hi'.

Hey Jarrod, thanks for your comment on my poster, but oh dear!! I have just patched all my pieces together with two sided tape that just would not work properly for me. Then walked around some of the others and guess what!! They all have beautifully presented posters with imagery that looks superb, and professional appearance throughout. Anyway, I am from the country!!! (And it shows!!, but I am proud of it!)

Thanks Jarrod, appreciate the kind words. The Physics VLC has an online invite located at http://vce-physics.wikispaces.com/ where both students and teachers can request access. At the moment we have a host of staff and students from other schools involved but are always looking for more, so spread the word!
It has become a great resource for all those involved, with the Elluminate Exam focus sessions being the highlight for many students.

I happened to catch your presentation Rethinking Homework and thought you did a great job managing two audiences at the same time. Our senior school leader who was also at your presentation, is going to now try and get the whole school calander on Google calander and get everyone to subscribe to get SMS alerts. So he walked away very happy!

I see we are both at ICTEV, so I hope to catch up with you there!

Hi Jarrod thanks for the feedback - there seems to be closet geocachers everywhere. I will look forward to following your travel bug and the other things you sent me. My sister has just started Caching with her primary kids at Lakes Entrance and they are loving it. She presented today in Sale but was able to take the group out geocaching which of course just adds that extra layer.

Hi Jarrod, thanks for your presentation on mobile phones. That was really great and shows the power of those devices which every student has in their pockets. (Wish we had mobile phone service at our school)
At the end of the conference I was speaking to John Pearce who showed me an adaptor for the wii that could be placed into a laptop and then converts it to a data show. Said you knew about them. So, was just wondering what the adaptor was called and how easy it is to do.

Hi there Jarrod. Sounds like you presentation on the use of mobile phones will be fascinating. Really looking forward to hearing it.

I'm hoping you might be able to help us out on a another small activity before the Showcase. We are collecting some specific stories of how innovation has had a real impact at a school. While we don't want to steal your thunder of your presentation, we were wondering if you would like to share a specific instance where an innovation has made a difference: a moment in time.

I've started a discussion forum to collect the innovation stories. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
