Welcome!

2009 Innovation Showcase

I presented a Show Me style presentation at the 2009 Innovation Showcase.
Below was the presentation description. If you would like to find out more, please don't hesitate to ask.

Virtual Learning Communities
Increasing connectedness through the use of the internet and web2.0 tools has redefined the concept of community as a defined geographic area. We are seeing increased uses of social networking tools and online spaces for truly immersive forms of learning and for a level of collaboration that is erasing traditional confines and borders. This project’s VCE Physics Unit 3 and 4 Virtual Learning Community links all students across Victoria with experienced educators, members of the Australian Institute of Physics Education Sub-Committee and textbook authors. Come and learn how the initiative created opportunities for students to interact with each other, educators and knowledgeable adults in authentic learning experiences.

I certainly agree schools kill creativity. I often describe teachers as little Hitler's, don't do this, you must do that and often what is being criticised is not a battle that needs to be won. Why do they do it? Whilst listening to Sir Ken and I ...

Learning Adventures

In order to model constructivist, non-coercive educational practice, Gary Stager coined the term 'learning adventures' to replace 'assignment' in describing classroom activity. He argues that this simple rhetorical shift has a profound impact on teachers spirit and effectiveness in teaching.

The notion of a learning adventure is simple:
-start with a prompt or an essential question
-make the task real-world and ensure it is intrinsically moti… Continue

Gaming: Using text-based adventures in education

Text-based adventures describe software that simulates environments in which players use text commands to control characters and influence the environment. These types of adventure games with text-based input and output were popular before the advent of personal computers with strong graphics capabilities. Perhaps the most influential text-based adventure of this era (early 1980’s) was a game titled Zork. The game is set in the ruins of an ancient empire lying far underground. You are a dauntles… Continue

Virtual Learning Communities

"Students connect with their friends via email, instant messaging and chat rooms online; search the web to explore their interests; express themselves fluently using new media; learn with educational software; play video and computer games in virtual realities; manipulate digital photos; go behind the scenes on DVD’s; channel surf on television; and chat on and take photographs with mobile phones. Through the media, they identify with their peers in the global culture through music, games, toContinue

Hi Adrian, yes thank you. I received my google invite. Then went to use it but it recommended using google chrome. Do you use that? So that took a while to download. Havent had time to look at it yet, but will on the weekend. How do you like google wave? Does it have as much potential as many think it might have? What do you suggest I do, once I get into it?

Adrian, ITMadeSimple sell the easi speak microphone. I will be ordering one just to test and then getting a class set as that makes it so easy for my 25 + student classes to find a quiet spot to do the recording and then return to class to edit their work and put it into final format.(I will go with the black colour if they have them in stock.)

Congratulations Adrian on both your NEiTA highly commended Excellence in Teaching Award, but especially on receiving the Federal Minister for Education's Excellence in ICT. It was justifiably received, so well done, again. (Hope you have your voice back again.)

Hi Adrian,

With your interest in Web Tools, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service. Here’s a public class recording conducted by Nellie Deutsch on Technology Integration.

Hi Adrian. Thanks for your great session yesterday and thanks for coming to mine and the tweetout. As part of the netbooks program in Victoria, teachers involved are being offered the opportunity to complete "The anywhere anytime powerful learning project with Will Richardson and Cheryl Nussbaum-Beach. Was that the course that you completed? If so, would it be worth my applying to do it, do you think? Time involved is always a big consideration, as I am rather busy with everything else. So, I would need to make sure that there was a lot to be gained by completing it.

Hey Adrian

Didnt get a chance to meet you at the Innovation Showcase but heard your session went down very well. Great Work. I was wondering with your Physics Ning if it was open to other schools and other staff? Just curious as we have a teacher here who is right into using our Boort SC ning as are the students. It sounds like this has become an invaluable resource for your students

Hi Adrian,
I've just had a look at your VCE Physics wiki and read about the Ning. Great work. I have tried to create a similar space for VCE Environmental Science students, but there are very few schools that offer the subject, and therefor few students. I started with blogs and used a Ning sporadically with my own VCE students last year. I will pass the link onto our VCE Physics teacher at Hawkesdale P12 College.
